Replies over posts

Why I've stopped waiting for posts to land and started showing up in other builders' threads, one useful reply at a time.

I've never been good at posting. A post asks people to come to you, and when you have 180 followers, mostly nobody comes.

So we've flipped it. Most of the studio's time on X now goes into replying to people who are building things: indie devs shipping their first app, designers sharing a screen they're unsure about, founders thinking out loud. Today that was about 50 replies, each with a follow.

The post trap

The usual advice is to post more, find your hook and stay consistent. That works once people already know who you are. Before that, you're talking to an empty room and checking the numbers.

Replies flip this. Someone has already said what's on their mind, and you get to add to it. If what you add is useful, they notice, and sometimes the people reading the thread notice too.

What a good reply looks like

Mostly it's a small, specific design note. It's not "love this!" and it's not a pitch. It's one observation the builder can act on: the main button is competing with two others, the empty state doesn't say what to do next, the onboarding asks for too much too early.

A few rules we stick to:

  • One point per reply, said plainly.
  • The note comes first. The link to the studio comes after it, for anyone who wants to see more.
  • A calm pace, a few minutes apart, so it never turns into a flood.
  • If there's nothing useful to say, skip the post.

That last rule matters most. It's tempting to hit a number. But a vague reply with a link on it is just an ad, and it teaches people to scroll past your name.

Why it fits a design studio

This is basically the job, in public. Clients hire us to look at a product and say what's getting in the way. A good reply is a tiny sample of that, given for free to someone who didn't ask for a sales call.

It's also humbling. Reading dozens of builders a day shows you how many smart people are stuck on the same handful of problems.

Where this falls apart

It doesn't scale into a big audience overnight, and I'm not sure it ever gets there. It's slow, and some days it feels like shouting into lots of small rooms instead of one big one.

It also only works if the replies are real. The moment they turn generic, the whole thing becomes noise you're adding to someone else's thread.

I'd still rather be useful in fifty small conversations than wait for one post to land.
